Thread is an emerging standard with a host of potential applications. Thread is progressively establishing itself as a viable protocol for a variety of IoT applications. Built on the power-efficient 802.15.4 MAC/PHY, Thread brings secure IP addressability and direct cloud access to mesh networks of up to thousands of devices. With Thread, developers can bring their apps, devices, systems and services to market faster because they’re using the same rich set of tools available for the Internet.
Thread is not designed from scratch. It reuses many protocols from IEEE and IETF, which have been tested for a long time and ensure the stability of Thread. The PHY layer is developed based on the radio driver of TLSR9 series SoC. The MAC layer adopts IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, which supports a large number of nodes and low power consumption. 6LoWPAN is an adaptation layer between MAC layer and IPv6 layer, which solves the problems of fragmentation, reassembly, and routing selection. Thread supports IPv6 addresses and can achieve low-cost bridging with other IP networks.UDP and DTLS provide interfaces and security guarantees for the application layer protocols (MLE, CoAP).
